So what exactly do you suppose those half million weekend ecstasy
users *do* when they're pilled up?

Let's say the average club gets 500 people on the door. That's
500 clubs opening every Friday and Saturday night to cater for
ecstasy users. A club of that size must employ at least 20 people
on the night itself (lighting and sound engineers, bar staff,
security staff, box office staff), so that's 10000 people employed
for 2 nights a week. Add in the other people essential to the
running of a club (cleaners, administrators, printers (to produce
flyers), artists (to decorate the club), etc.), and the bits of
the music industry producing techno and other "rave" music, and
it's starting to look like quite a few jobs.

Look at it another way: if every ecstasy user spends just one pound
(not enough to buy a bottle of water in many clubs) that they
wouldn't otherwise have done, the "ecstasy offshoot" industry has
a turnover of 25 million pounds per year. The real figure must be
far higher, even ignoring the production and distribution of the
drug itself. (Still trivial compared to the motor industry, but
what isn't?)
