Most to least, but Andrew is unclear on the exact criteria he is using
to rank them.

No? I have. Not a pretty sight.

Amphetamine sulphate, and similar amphetamines, are definitely
addictive. The narrowest definition of "addictive" seems to be
"produces physical withdrawal symptoms", and amphetamines certainly
do that.

That definition is, I think, of little practical use. Cannabis,
for example, produces no physical withdrawal symptoms, yet there
certainly are users of cannabis who feel themselves "addicted" in
the popular sense of the word. This is where broader terms such
as "dependence" and "habit forming" come in.

There's an interesting article on addiction, from the New York
Times, at

    http://www.wwdc.com/~hemp/arch/addictvn.html

The article quotes two experts who rank various drugs in the
following order for causing dependence among users (from most to
least).

Nicotine, heroin, cocaine, alcohol, caffeine, marijuana.

But it's a very complex subject, involving both physiology and
psychology, and I think such simplistic "league tables" are fairly
worthless.
