Yes.

There are several obvious biological checkpoints on this slippery slope:

    a) mammals vs non-mammals;

    b) vertebrates vs invertebrates;

    c) animals vs non-animals.

I think a fairly convincing argument for morally different treatment of
vertebrates and invertebrates could be built upon the differences in
their nervous systems, although most vegetarians (myself included) opt
to exclude the entire animal kingdom from their diet.

If you still feel as bad about killing a lettuce as killing a sheep,
then it is possible (although perhaps not easy) to survive on a diet
entirely composed of "fruit", that is, parts of plants than can be
removed without killing them.
