Justifying the heirarchs

In article <199504131027.LAA00246@onechip.demon.co.uk>, simon
<simon@onechip.co.uk> advocates storing news articles in compressed
form.

Lempel-Ziv-like algorithms (as implemented by compress and gzip)
typically achieve a compression ratio of around 2:1 on text data. The
volume of news more than doubles each year, so compressing news would
buy you a few months' worth of disk and bandwidth at an enormous cost in
CPU.

It's worse than that, though. About one quarter of the total news
volume is from the alt/binaries/pictures hierarchy (reference
ftp://ftp.pipex.net/pub/news/.news-volume) and consists of uuencoded
GIFs and JPEGs. Since the GIF and JPEG formats are already compressed,
further compression can only undo the 3:4 expansion introduce by
uuencode.

This suggests that it would be more worthwhile to implement full binary
capability in news readers and transports, so that uuencoding in not
needed in the first place.
