Bear in mind that newsgroups tend to have long lives.  This strikes me
as a somewhat short-sighted naming scheme.

And where should general discussion go?

I suggest you start with uk.media.tv.sf.x-files, and try to establish a
convention for marking "spoilers".  If this proves not to work, then you
will have a good case for splitting the group, maybe along these lines:

    uk.media.tv.sf.x-files.misc
    uk.media.tv.sf.x-files.season-1
    uk.media.tv.sf.x-files.season-2
    ...
