For me, realising that `cat -' and `cat' meant the same thing was a
small but significant step on the road to Enlightenment.  (For suitable
values of Enlightenment: in this case, the difference between producing
a shell script that happens to work, and knowing exactly what it means
and why it works.  I can still remember the moment quite clearly, and
what the shell script we were working on was doing, even though it's
nearly 10 years ago.)

Sometimes I like to share this with the other sentient (and
non-sentient) beings on comp.unix.shell :-).  Next time, I won't phrase
it in terms of "Useless Use of...".
