This is really not a good idea.  Especially here in comp.unix.shell, I
think the `/usr/lib/sendmail' interface is much less problematic.

The main difficulties with the SMTP client approach are: i) it's very
hard to program in most shells (although not Perl); ii) you have to deal
with the possibility that the SMTP server is not there; and iii) you
have to know what you are doing.

As an example of the last problem,

>RCPT TO: xyz@XYZ.com

this is not valid RFC 821 syntax, and will be rejected by some SMTP
servers.
