This kind of thing does *not* belong in cat.

have a quote from Rob Pike in my signature: "perhaps if people had
understood fork() better we wouldn't have threads".  Maybe if people
had understood cat better we wouldn't have mmap().  :-) ]

That's a better approach, but a complete solution to the problem is
impossible.
