msntp-1.4 bails out under Linux

I've been looking at msntp as a lightweight alternative to xntpd for
client hosts. Unfortunately, I haven't yet been able to persuade it
to run for more than a few hours at a time. Here's a typical session.

    # msntp -r ntp1.pipex.net
The time correction is -17.907 +/- 0.026+0.034 seconds
Do you want to correct the time anyway? y
    # msntp -a -x -v ntp1.pipex.net
    msntp options: a=3 p=0 v=1 e=0.100 E=5.000
        d=18000 c=5 x=18000 op=1 ntp1.pipex.net
msntp: using NTP server ntp1.pipex.net (158.43.128.66)
    msntp: after 0.0 secs acc. 1 rej. 0 flush 0 max.off. 0.002 corr. 0.000
    msntp: 1997 Sep 02 10:24:28.634 - 0.002 +/- 0.054 secs
    msntp: after 5 hours 0 mins acc. 2 rej. 0 flush 0 max.off. 0.689 corr. 0.000
    msntp: 1997 Sep 02 15:24:33.050 - 0.689 +/- 0.776 secs
    msntp: outstanding time adjustment (1,572947)

My interpretation of this is that msntp called adjtime(), and the return
value indicated that a previous call had not completed, so it gave up.
(I have noticed that Linux's adjtime() slews the clock quite slowly,
compared with SunOS 4, for example.) I'm not running anything else that
should be setting the clock.

I've tried tweaking the command line arguments, but without knowing
what's wrong, I'm groping in the dark. So far, msntp has never run for
more than 24 hours.

The client is a dual processor 200MHz Pentium Pro, running RedHat 4.2
(kernel 2.0.30). I happen to know (:-), that ntp1.pipex.net is a Sun
Ultra, running Solaris 2.5.1. It's at stratum 2, keeps very good time,
and is topologically (and geographically) very close, although one link
from here to there is quite congested.

Any thoughts?

Tim.
