It's better than it used to be, but...

    $ ./makesendmail
    Configuration: os=SunOS, rel=5.5.1, rbase=5, rroot=5.5, arch=sun4, sfx=
    Creating obj.SunOS.5.5.1.sun4 using Makefile.SunOS.5.5
    ...
    ld: fatal: library -l44bsd: not found
    ld: fatal: File processing errors. No output written to sendmail
    make: *** [sendmail] Error 1

This problem isn't documented in the READ_ME file. There *is* a comment
in Makefiles/Makefile.SunOS.5.5 explaining how to fix it, but why can't
sendmail compile "out of the box" like GNU packages, or Perl, or xntp,
or qmail do?

(Answer: because sendmail uses platform tests; all those other packages
use feature tests.)
