I always thought the distinction was made by biologists.

No culture regularly eats members of our own species.

Many people, at least in the West, would find the idea of eating
other primates abhorrent.  Others baulk at eating mammals, or
vertebrates, or all animals.

It's apparently possible to avoid killing any life for food and
survive on "fruit" (in an extended sense that includes seeds, nuts,
fungi fruitbodies, and so on), although I've never met a fruitarian.

Unless you advocate cannibalism, you have to draw a line somewhere
in the biological taxonomy.

[ Subtitle for the hard-of-understanding: I am *not* claiming that
eating meat is equivalent to cannibalism. ]
